Contrasting patterns of communicating humor between U.S. and Japanese stand-up comedy will also be demonstrated in the analysis of comedy routines. I will identify U.S. patterns and Japanese patterns of structuring humor in comedy routines while drawing on the notions of keying and frame (Goffman, 1974), as well as contexualization cues (Gumperz, 1982; 1992; 1996).
